JOHANNA KRIMMEL – YAMANOTE
2013, 2017, Oil on wood
With her series "Yamanote", Johanna Krimmel processes her observations from Tokyo, which were initially recorded in travel sketchbooks. Yamanote is one of the most important railway lines: the roundtrip through the megacity takes less than an hour. On the way to work, to school, shopping, home: the commuters take every little opportunity to collapse in exhaustion. Sleeping in public, the cramped space of a train compartment - an extremely private, isolated and vulnerable moment. Hair falls in the face, makes the person unrecognizable, reminiscent of fable and spirit beings from the Japanese folklore. In a further stage of development, the characters begin to dissolve, lost in their own dreams and nightmares.
Opening on Thursday, August 23, 2018
